Moe's Surgery
An update on Moe:
We've made it to our fundraising goal! Though the counter says 55%, we also had an immensely successful yard sale that allowed us to raise the rest of the money. And just in time, because Moe will be having his surgery tomorrow.
Those of you who donated and received the email update know that there was a possibility that amputation would be necessary for Moe, and sadly that is the case. His leg is just too damaged to save. There was an experimental surgery option that would have left Moe with a completely straight leg (no knee joint), but there was no guarantee it would have worked, and would have left Moe with only a partially functional leg. As well, he wouldn't have been able to have the surgery for about 7 months, and would have had to wear a cast until then. Since his current cast has made him very uncomfortable and unhappy, we didn't think that was feasible. Moe went for his first proper walk the other day (!) and we don't want him to have to wait months for the next one.
We've also heard from tons of dog owners and vets who say that dogs adapt very quickly to having three legs. Since Moe is so young and so smart, we think he'll be running with the best of them in no time.
Though we're sad that someone allowed this to happen to Moe, we're really thankful that he was able to be rescued from the mill, and will get to live a full, happy life with a loving family. We're also grateful to have discovered how many wonderful people there are out there - we received donations from both friends and strangers, and it was really heartwarming to know so many people who had never met Moe cared about him so much.
We'll send an email update in a few days, once Moe has had the chance to recover from his surgery a bit. Thank you so much to all of you!!!
